Optional Font Change
Starting Fall 2009 the Editorial Office will be recommending a sans serif typface for all ETDs. In Word, the recommended typface will be Arial 12 pt. and in LaTeX it will be Helvetica 12 pt. If you have already started your program you may complete your document in Times New Roman if you desire. It will be several years before a sans serif typrface is required. However, the templates will start using the new typfaces immediately

Microsoft Word Formatting Templates
Remember to follow the tutorials on updating the Table of Contents, List of Figures and List of Tables before printing your first submission. This omission is the number one reason for documents being rejected!

Microsoft Word 2007 FeaturesTo be able to use the new features in MS Word simply "Save As . . ." and choose the .docx file type. Just remember that not everybody will be able to read your files in this format. We provide the template in a format that is as widely accepted as possible, but it functions the same way in both the .doc and .docx formats. Macintosh Link IssuesFor some reason MicroSoft Word works differently on Macs and PCs. The links for the Table of Contents, List of Tables and List of Figures, required by the Editorial Office, are formed around the complete text of each entry on a PC but on a Mac the link forms only around the page number. When the pdf is created the links are invisible and when an editor clicks on the text and nothing happens you get notified that your links don't work. The solution would be to bug MicroSoft into treating these two platforms equally. The work-around is to convert your files to a pdf on a PC after cutting and pasting the TOC, LOT and LOF from a PC version of the template into your Mac version and updating these tables one last time before you convert. The other alternative would be to go to Acrobat Professional Tools menu, select advanced editing - link tool. When this is selected all of the links around the page numbers will become visible rectangles and can be "grabbed" and stretched to fit over the full text. Both solutions are involved and the choice really depends upon how many links need to be made. Please understand we are not "Anti-Mac" but there is a significant difference between the platforms when it comes to creating an acceptable ETD |
