ETD Technical Support - Creating a Facing Legend Page
|
The purpose of this tutorial is to give you an idea of what a facing page and a facing legend page should look like and how to create them in the Microsoft Word Formatting Template. If you're using the formatting template, it is best to perform the following actions in the subdocuments individually. Facing Pages and Facing Legend Pages are necessary when you have an image that is so large that its caption is unable to appear on the same page as the figure. The usual rules of figure captions are modified to accomodate facing legend pages. Normally the figure caption should appear BELOW the figure, however in a facing legend situation, the caption appears first sequentially, then the figure. Below is an example of how a normal figure caption should look:
For a facing page and its facing legend page, you will have to:
Step 1 - Placing the figure caption on its own pageTo accomplish this, you will have to type the figure caption first, then insert a Section Break (Next Page) immediately above the figure caption. For more information in inserting section breaks, please review our tutorial on inserting section breaks. Step 2- Creating a blank page for your figureOnce you have completed Step 1, insert an ordinary page break after the figure caption. This will generate a new blank page upon which you can include the figure itself. For instructions on how to accomplish this, please review our tutorial on inserting page breaks. You can then insert your image on this blank page. Step 3 - Removing the page number from the facing legend pageYou will now have to remove the page number from the page containing the figure caption. For instructions on how to do this, please review the tutorials on the Editorial Office Page Numbering Rules, and on How To Insert/Modify Page Numbers. Make sure you turn off "Same as Previous" in your nearby sections so that your page numbers don't disappear from areas where you don't want them disappearing. When you have finished Step 3, your facing legend pages should look like this:
Note: Your List of Figures entry should link to the figure rather than to the figure caption (as the template is normally programmed to do). This will require that you make some modifications after final PDF conversion.
These modifications can be done by following our tutorial on modifying PDF documents using Adobe Acrobat 6.0. The subsequent pages follow the traditional rules for page numbering location in this portion of the thesis/dissertation.
