ETD Technical Support - Landscaping Help (Rotating Pages)

Main tutorial page | Home

The purpose of this tutorial is to demonstrate how to rotate your pages from the portrait to the landscape orientation so that your thesis/dissertation can accomodate figures/tables that are wider than they are tall.

This will require you to insert section breaks above and below the image/table you plan to rotate, and then you will have to modify the page numbering so that it appears correctly on the page once it is printed.

Step 1 - Inserting Section Breaks

In order to "landscape" a page in your document, you must first:

  • Insert a Section Break (Next Page) before the table/figure you wish to "landscape/rotate".

  • Insert a Section Break (Next Page) after the last table/figure in the planned rotated section.

Below is an example showing where to insert your section breaks:

For detailed instructions on inserting section breaks, please review our section break tutorial.

Step 2 - Rotating the page

To rotate your page, perform the following:

  • Go to File - Page Setup
  • Click on the Margins tab and choose the Landscape orientation

Your margins should read as follows:

Location
Margin
Top
1"
Bottom
1"
Left
1"
Right
1"

Below is a diagram of how this should appear:

Step 3 - Creating the page numbers

Place your cursor on the first normal page after the landscaped page(s):

  • Go to View - Header and Footer

You will be presented with a toolbar similar to the one pictured below. Follow the instructions below, using this tool bar.

  • While in the FOOTER, go to the Menu Bar (Note: the insert page number from the Menu Bar is different from the Insert page number from the Header and Footer toolbar) and select Insert - Page Numbers, Choose CENTER alignment.

The pull down menu will resemble the image below:

This will allow you to insert a page number within a text box, giving you control of where the text box and page number appear. The subsequent menu will resemble the image below:

  • Remain in the FOOTER for the next step where we will accurately position & orient your page numbers.

Step 4- Accurately positioning your page numbers

While still in the footer:

  • RIGHT CLICK your mouse on the edge of the text box that surrounds your newly created page number and you should see the following pop-up menu:

  • Select Format Frame....

In the dialog box that appears, set your page number's position to the following values:

Current Template
Orientation Position Relative to
Horizontal
0.5"
Page
Vertical
Center
Page

When completed, your dialog box should resemble the image below.

  • Click OK when you're done.

Step 5 - Correctly orienting your page numbers

You now have to adjust the text orientation of the page number so that when collated, your page numbering appears right-side up.

While the new page # text box/frame is still highlighted:

  • Go to Format - Text Direction and choose the option that resembles this:

  • Click OK when you're done.

When completed, your landscaped page should look similar to this:

Step 6 (Final) - Correcting the page numbering of the adjacent pages/chapters

Once you have completed Step 5, examine your following portrait pages to make sure that your page numbering appears in the proper location.

On the first "Portrait" page following your last "Landscaped" page:

  • Go to View - Header and Footer
  • Turn OFF Same as Previous in the HEADER.
  • Insert Page # using the Insert Page Numbers icon that appears in the "Header and Footer" button bar below.

All portrait pages in a thesis or dissertation should be numbered at the bottom of the page in Arabic numerals
