The purpose of this tutorial is to demonstrate how
to rotate your pages from the portrait to the landscape orientation
so that your thesis/dissertation can accomodate figures/tables that
are wider than they are tall.
This will require you to insert section breaks
above and below the image/table you plan to rotate, and then you will
have to modify the page numbering so that it appears
correctly on the page once it is printed.
Step 1 - Inserting Section Breaks
In order to "landscape" a page in your document,
you must first:
-
Insert a Section Break (Next Page)
before the table/figure you wish
to "landscape/rotate". Click on the "Page Layout" Tab and choose "Breaks" in the "Page Setup" Group. Select "Section Break - Next Page" From the dropdown menu that appears.
-
Use the same process to insert a Section Break (Next Page)
after the last table/figure in the
planned rotated section.
Below is an example showing where to insert your section
breaks:

For detailed instructions on inserting section breaks,
please review our section break tutorial.
Step 2 - Rotating the page
To rotate your page, perform the following:
- Go to Page Layout - Page Setup
- Click on Orientation button and choose
the Landscape orientation from the list that will appear.
Your margins should read as follows:
| Location |
Margin |
| Top |
1" |
| Bottom |
1" |
| Left |
1" |
| Right |
1" |
Step 3 - Creating the page numbers
Place your cursor on the first normal page after the landscaped page(s):
- Go to Insert - Header and Footer - and choose "Edit Header" from the bottom of the menu that appears.
- In the Navigation Group make sure that "Link to Previous" is turned off. Choose "Go to Footer" and make sure "Link to Previous" is turned off there as well.
Close the Header and Footer and move back to the first landscape page. Click on that page.
- Go to Insert - Header and Footer - and choose "Edit Header" from the bottom of the menu that appears.
- In the Navigation Group make sure that "Link to Previous" is turned off for both the header and footer in the landscaped section as well.
- Go to Insert > Header & Footer Group click on the Choose "Page Number" button and choose Page Margins > Plain Number > Boarder Left from the dropdown menu.
- Click on the new page number to activate the Text Box Tools found on the right above the row of "Tabs." Click on the "Text Box Tools" and in the "Text" Group click on the "Text Direction" button one time to turn the text ditection 90 degrees CW.
- Click on the Home tab and select the boarder tool from the "Paragraph" Group and select "No Boarder" from the menu.
- Finally click on Insert - Header and Footer - and choose "Edit Header" to exit the "Edit Header and Footer" mode.
When completed, your landscaped page should look similar
to this:
All portrait pages in a thesis or dissertation should be numbered at the bottom of the page in Arabic numerals
