This tutorial is only needed if using the Multi-File Template

Removing documents is fairly easy. In our example, we're going to tell the master document that we no longer want it to look at chapter7.doc anymore.

Follow these steps to accomplish this:

  • Open the master.doc file.

  • Click on the Show/Hide icon in the standard toolbar so that you can see your section breaks and subdocument boundaries.

  • Go to View - Outline and expand the subdocuments by clicking on the appropriate icon in the Outlining Button Bar.

  • Once expanded, stay in OUTLINE VIEW, and scroll down to the Chapter you wish to remove.

  • Once there, place your cursor in the chapter.

  • Click on the REMOVE SUBDOCUMENT icon in the Outlining toolbar.

Note: Doing this has removed the subdocument's hyperlink from the master document, however it has also copied the content of the "removed" subdocument/chapter into the master document itself. Therefore, the content of the removed subdocument must now be removed from the master.doc file.

  • Select all the text between the Section Break (Next Page) above the removed chapter's text, and the Section Break (Continuous) below the removed chapter's text.

  • Once this has been selected, press DELETE.

  • SAVE what you've done.

Make sure you update your Table of Contents (TOC), List of Tables (LOT) and List of Figures (LOF) before you print the final version of your document.

If you have any challenges with your document, please feel free to contact us at etd@grove.ufl.edu, visit the ETD Consulting Lab in The Hub, Room 224 or call 392-HELP (4357) and select option 5.
